Press Release for November 4, 2012
At 1330 hours on Sunday November 4, 2012, Bodega Bay Medic 811 along with units from USCG Bodega Bay, Marin County Fire, Coast Guard Fire, National Park Service, State Parks Lifeguards and Sonoma County Sheriff’s helicopter and boat were dispatched and responded to a report of a capsized boat with 7 persons in the water in the area of the mouth of Tomales Bay.
The SCSO boat was staffed with two deputies and a Bodega Bay Fire Paramedic. SCSO Helicopter Henry 1 arrived first at scene and immediately set-up for the rescue of the 5 subjects on the top of the capsized hull of the boat. MCFD personnel arrived at scene and established command and a staging area for incoming resources at Lawson’s Landing. Bodega Bay Fire 8880 responded to USCG Station Bodega Bay to assist with coordination and communications due to the multiple agencies involved. The SCSO boat arrived at scene and determined the capsized boat was too far into the surf line for rescue vessels to get to, they coordinated between the USCG boats and Henry 1 while the rescues were taking place.
It was determined to that two children were trapped inside the cuddy cabin of the capsized boat in an air space, a MCFD rescue swimmer and a USCG rescue swimmer were deployed to attempt to reach the children. They were unsuccessful while in the water; NPS Rescue 29 was able to tow the boat closer to shore where rescuers on the ground were able to extricate the 2 children. Medic 811 along with REACH 1 and Medic 991 transported subjects to local hospitals where they are being treated.
